I had a minor surgery on my right knee .It was a minor thing but being on knee it meant that I was bed ridden .I was allowed to walk as little as possible that too with a stick .For a few days I enjoyed being on the bed but as the days passed it became very boring .It was also very depressing and I had fears whether I would be able to walk around ever .However if I tried to share my fears with anyone Iwas told to be POSITIVE in my thinking .It was so bad that the word positive almost made me want to scream .I learnt a lesson that I hope I would not forget .It is alright to give a pep talk and convince someone about the power of positive thinking .But it is equally important to let a person vent out his worries and problems and just LISTEN .In fact let a person speak out and express the feelings . Often it is the bottling of fears and problems that leads to depression and sometimes even suicide .Too much emphasis on positive thing may sometimes backfire as a person may hide and supress his feelings as not be ridiculed as a person with negative thinking .So the first thing if we want to help a person is to listen to his woes with sympathy and than gently persuade him to think positively .
